چکیده

This Draft Guidebook is an assessment tool that focuses on the functioning of vernal pool wetlands within the Southern Californian eco-region, specifically San Diego County. Its purpose is to provide trained practitioners the means to achieve efficient, reproducible and logical functional assessment results for vernal pool wetlands in San Diego County, California. Results of these assessments can then be used in a variety of ways, such as evaluation of sites for restoration potential, assessment of impacts from existing or proposed projects and monitoring restoration success. Due to the high degree of variability experienced by temporary wetlands in arid climates, we have developed both direct and indirect functional indices for four of the five functions we identified. Direct assessments can only be made when there is sufficient precipitation to elicit the responses that demonstrate function, and we have sought to objectively define "sufficient." Consistent with an HGM approach, use of this Draft Guidebook should be confined to the geographic region and hydrogeomorphic class, subclass and pool types for which it was developed. Use of this methodology outside the boundaries of the reference domain is wholly inappropriate. We are hopeful that our approach can be modified for other pool types within the region, and to vernal pools in other parts of California and Oregon. Bauder, Ellen T., Andrew J. Case Study: Application of the HGM Western Kentucky Low-Gradient Riverine Guidebook to Monitoring of Wetland Development

PURPOSE: One of many potential uses of the hydrogeomorphic (HGM) approach for assessing wetland functions is the monitoring of newly restored wetland sites to determine how quickly wetland functions develop and whether function-based mitigation objectives are being met. This technical note presents a case study of the application of the Western Kentucky Low-Gradient Riverine Guidebook to monito...

ERDC/EL TR-13-11 "Hydrogeomorphic (HGM) Approach to Assessing Wetland Functions: Guidelines for Developing Guidebooks (Version 2)"

The Hydrogeomorphic (HGM) Approach for assessing wetlands was developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a procedure for assessing the capacity of a wetland to perform ecological functions. The Approach requires classification of wetlands based on geomorphic setting, water source, and hydrodynamics. The objective of the Guidelines for Guidebook Development is to provide detailed guidance ...

Agricultural conservation practices and wetland ecosystem services in the wetland-rich Piedmont-Coastal Plain region

In the eastern U.S. Coastal Plain and Piedmont region, diverse inland wetlands (riverine, depressional, wet flats) have been impacted by or converted to agriculture. Farm Bill conservation practices that restore or enhance wetlands can return their ecological functions and services to the agricultural landscape. We review the extent of regional knowledge regarding the effectiveness of these con...

Toward an Ecosystem Approach to Vernal Pool Compensation and Conservation

Current federal regulatory limitations in protecting vernal pools can be attributed to incomplete data on the status of vernal pools statewide, lack of a methodology for assessing the functions of vernal pool ecosystems, failure to incorporate contemporary ecological principles into the development of compensatory mitigation strategies, and a piecemeal regulatory approach that results in admini...
